Terry Abroad – Natalie Coleman

Natalie Coleman (TAMU 2016) was an undergraduate researcher in the hydraulic engineering department at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile over summer 2018.

Why did you choose to go abroad?

My career goal is to design effective and sustainable engineering systems for communities on a global scale, and I believed it was important for me to collaborate with people from different cultural and academic backgrounds.

How has this experience impacted you?

I had the opportunity to learn more about hydraulic engineering, particularly the sector of renewable energy. I also gained an appreciation for the Chilean culture, and to an extent, a greater understanding of my Hispanic background.

 

If you could give advice to other Terry Scholars who want to study abroad, what would you tell them?

The biggest obstacle stopping students is taking the chance to apply. It may seem intimidating, but this is the perfect age to travel around the world- getting to know different cultures and making incredible memories. Because of the Terry Scholarship, I was able to save enough money to participate in this program, and I know this has added to my college experience.
